Prevalon HD5 AC Targets Faster Battery Storage Rollouts

Factory-built BESS design aims to cut field work and commissioning risk

Prevalon Energy has introduced the HD5 AC, an AC battery energy storage system designed to make utility-scale storage projects more straightforward to install, commission and maintain.

The launch adds to Prevalon’s wider storage portfolio, which includes the HD5 DC and Hybrid Power Stabilizer. The company is targeting developers, utilities, independent power producers, data center operators and large commercial energy users looking for more flexible battery energy storage system designs.

Battery energy storage is becoming a bigger part of grid reliability, renewable energy integration and power planning for high-load sectors. But for project owners, the pressure is not only about adding capacity. It is also about managing construction timelines, reducing field labor, avoiding commissioning delays and keeping systems serviceable over the long term.

Factory integration aims to reduce field work

The HD5 AC is built around a factory-integrated design that brings power conversion, controls, thermal management and safety systems together before the unit reaches site. Prevalon says this approach can reduce EPC complexity by limiting high-voltage DC field cabling, reducing trenching needs and simplifying grid connection work.

That matters because field installation remains one of the more unpredictable parts of large-scale battery projects. More integration before delivery can help reduce the number of tasks that need to be handled on site, while also supporting a more consistent commissioning process.

The system also includes a self-powered auxiliary capability. According to Prevalon, this allows the platform to use stored battery power to support certain commissioning activities before full grid readiness. For developers facing tight project schedules, this could help reduce delays linked to energization and grid connection timelines.

Safety, serviceability and scale remain central to the design

Prevalon has positioned the HD5 AC for grid-scale storage, renewable energy integration, data center power support and mission-critical applications. Its modular format allows projects to be configured for different durations, site layouts and energy density needs.

The platform uses a distributed string architecture that isolates faults to smaller 500 kW blocks. The aim is to limit the impact of component issues and support faster replacement when maintenance is required. Integrated thermal management is also designed to help maintain battery performance during phased builds, commissioning delays and long-term operation.

Safety is another focus area for the new system. Prevalon states that the HD5 AC can reduce available short-circuit current by up to 10 times compared with conventional architectures, which may help reduce arc-flash risk and simplify protection design. The platform also includes ventilation, detection and fire protection features intended to align with changing battery storage safety standards.

For resiliency-focused customers, the system can also be deployed within Prevalon’s Hybrid Power System architecture. When paired with the company’s insightOS energy management system, the HD5 AC adds monitoring, controls and asset management capabilities across storage projects.

As battery storage projects move closer to critical infrastructure and higher-demand users, deployment speed is only part of the equation. The HD5 AC reflects a wider move in the BESS market toward standardized, factory-built systems that can reduce field complexity without overlooking safety, maintainability or long-term performance.
