How Judging Works

The E+E Leader Awards are evaluated through an independent, anonymous judging process to ensure fairness, consistency, and measurable impact. Entries are scored using a standardized 1–5 framework focused on:

  • ✓ Measurable operational impact and demonstrated results
  • ✓ Environmental performance and sustainability outcomes
  • ✓ Innovation and technical merit
  • ✓ Scalability and replicability
  • ✓ Implementation strength and execution quality

Judges receive anonymized entry materials and score independently. The program maintains strict safeguards to prevent conflicts of interest. Typical judging commitment is approximately 10-15 hours across the evaluation period.

He is Director of Energy & Sustainability Marketing at ICF International, supporting heat pump adoption with EPA ENERGY STAR. He spent 16 years at Sears leading energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives, building partnerships and aiding Puerto Rico's recovery after Hurricanes Irma and Maria. A GE-trained Master Black Belt, he holds a BSME from the University of Illinois and an MBA from William & Mary.

Kirby Dipert holds an MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management, an MPA from Indiana University South Bend, and a MLS degree with a Professional Certificate in Sustainable Studies from Indiana University South Bend. Kirby recently completed his Master's Degree from Pennsylvania State University with a concentration in Renewable Energy and Sustainability. Kirby is active in the Great Lakes Chapter of the AESP and the local ASHRAE chapter. He is also a LEED Green Associate and the board chair for the North Central Branch of the USGBC in Indiana.

An entrepreneurial marketing executive, he brings deep experience across hospitality, healthcare, and telecommunications. He has led product development and strategic brand realignments, is a trusted advisor to C-suite leaders, and is driven by the opportunity to reduce pollution and waste in the global energy sector.

Dr. Jessica Jannaman is Director of EHS & Sustainability at TE Connectivity in Royal Oak, Michigan, with prior leadership roles at Advanced Vehicle Assemblies, Dura Automotive Systems, FCA, and ABB. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Safety Conference and is Past President of the ASSP Greater Detroit Chapter. Jessica also supports Oakland University as Chair of the Environmental, Health & Safety Industry Advisory Board and serves as an adjunct professor.

Alan L. Johnson is Managing Director, Chemical & Workplace Safety at 3E, where he leads global strategy for the company's safety product portfolio. He founded and built 3E's Alliance Network, expanding the firm's global footprint through integrated technology partnerships since joining in 2015. With more than 15 years of leadership in business development, alliances, and product management, he holds a BA from Mercyhurst College, an FLE certificate from Université Laval, and a dual MBA from RIT.

Paul Leavoy has worked in the green energy sector for more than 20 years, beginning as a journalist covering early public and private efforts to drive the green transition before moving into greentech communications. He later became a research analyst at LNS Research, where he founded the firm's EHS and Sustainability practice in 2014, and served as Founding Editor in Chief of Ascend Magazine, focusing on policy and regulation. For eight years, he has been a judge on Environment + Energy Leader's Product and Project Panel and currently serves as Editor in Chief of Green Growth Digest.

His work drove major performance gains, including sharp reductions in TRIR, OSHA incident rates, and LTIR, alongside $2.3 million in workers' compensation savings since 2019.

With more than 35 years of experience, he has managed projects ranging from nuclear decontamination studies to on-site solar and battery energy storage programs.

Mary Ann Grena Manley is the Founder & President of 15E Communications in Washington, D.C. She is an environmental lawyer, policy analyst, and communications expert who advises clients on strategy, content, policy, and brand leadership as an independent sustainability consultant. She spent more than 20 years leading coverage of global environment, health, safety, and sustainability at Bloomberg Industry Group before founding 15E in 2020. She holds a BA from American University, a JD from Widener University School of Law, and is a member of the D.C. Bar.

Charles McEwen has more than 20 years of experience in industrial hygiene, environmental health and safety compliance, and biological safety. He currently serves as GEMS Program Manager for the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center, overseeing a 26-acre main campus and 22 community-based outpatient clinics across metro Atlanta. Using ISO 14001 standards, he leads environmental sustainability and compliance programs and has earned national recognition and multiple environmental and sustainability awards, including honors from the EPA.

A Certified Energy Manager and active environmental volunteer, she brings creativity and problem-solving skills to advancing sustainability performance.

With more than a decade in the energy sector, including over seven years in renewables, he has led development of more than 1.2 GW of solar and 800 MW of storage in markets such as CAISO and ERCOT. He holds a Master's in Engineering Management from the University of Texas, is PMP certified, and is a member of SEIA.

She works closely with affiliates including Hyundai Glovis, Mobis, Transys, Hyundai Steel, Hyundai Materials, and battery joint ventures with SK and LG. Previously, she spent over five years in management at Tesla and held EHS roles in packaging and global ingredients manufacturing. She holds a bachelor's in chemistry from North Carolina State University and an MS in Occupational Safety & Health from Columbia Southern University.

How much time does judging require?

Typical judging commitment is 10-15 hours across the evaluation period in January to early February. This includes reading and scoring anonymized entries using our standardized framework.

Do judges need to disclose conflicts of interest?

Yes. We maintain strict conflict-of-interest safeguards. Judges are asked to disclose any relationships with submitting organizations and recuse themselves from scoring relevant entries.

Do I need to publish anything or give a presentation?

No publication is required. Judges are recognized publicly when winners are announced, but detailed involvement remains confidential during the judging process. Speaking opportunities may arise, but are entirely optional.

Can I judge if I work for a vendor or sponsor?

Judges must maintain vendor neutrality throughout the evaluation process. Since we receive entries from a wide range of industries and company types, we take careful approach to all judge assignments to ensure zero conflict of interest. If you work for a company that may submit entries or sponsor the awards, we'll discuss safeguards with you during the application process to determine the best fit for your participation.
