Home Depot is scaling up its environmental footprint through a new long-term reforestation initiative, developed in partnership with the
Arbor Day Foundation. The project aims to restore 2,000 acres of forest by 2028—equivalent in size to more than 800 of the company’s retail locations. The expanded effort reflects a broader corporate strategy focused on environmental resilience, biodiversity, and responsible sourcing.
More than 500 acres are already underway, with projects targeting ecologically significant areas. These include restoration of
longleaf pine ecosystems in Florida and Texas—critical habitats that have been diminished over decades—and biodiversity-focused work in Brazil’s Amazon and Atlantic forests. The goal extends beyond tree planting to include restoration of entire ecosystems, protection of native species, and long-term environmental stability.
These actions support Home Depot’s
sustainable forestry standards, which span procurement practices and supply chain operations. By aligning forest health with its retail strategy, the company is investing in natural infrastructure that underpins water conservation, carbon sequestration, and habitat protection.
Driving Environmental Responsibility Across the Ecosystem
Home Depot’s sustainability framework extends beyond its stores, incorporating supplier engagement and customer education. The company continues to encourage reforestation practices throughout its value chain, including with seasonal vendors who replant three trees for every one harvested.
Through its Eco Actions platform, Home Depot is helping consumers reduce their environmental footprint via energy-efficient product offerings and how-to resources for at-home sustainability projects. These efforts have already led to significant cost savings, and the company estimates an additional $375 million in customer energy savings by 2028, adding to the $1 billion projected since 2023.
Home Depot positions sustainability as part of its core business model. Its environmental strategy aligns with broader corporate goals, which also include community development, workforce training, disaster response, and veteran support through The Home Depot Foundation.
