Florida Keys Cleanup Highlights Business-Driven Conservation

Proud Source and Hyatt Centric team up to tackle marine debris and waste

A recent initiative in the Florida Keys highlights how business partnerships can lead to measurable environmental impact. Proud Source Water and Hyatt Centric Key West partnered on a marine debris cleanup at Rest Beach, removing over 120 pounds of waste—mainly microplastics that threaten native turtle populations. The cleanup, led by Reef Relief, involved more than 30 volunteers using Parks Project cleanup kits to help protect the local marine ecosystem.

This event is part of Proud Source Water’s broader Proud Planet Project, which focuses on reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable packaging. The initiative pairs cleanups with the use of 100% recyclable aluminum bottles, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of consumer packaged goods through localized community efforts.

Proud Source Water President Michael Boyd underscored the company's intent to rethink responsibility in the packaged goods sector:"Proud Planet Project is a progressive and innovative program built on partnerships with community-focused organizations like Hyatt Centric Key West that gather and engage the local community in efforts to minimize the damaging footprint humans can leave on our planet's greatest resources."

Hospitality Sector Pushes Toward Circular Sustainability

The cleanup builds on a longer-term partnership between Proud Source Water and Hyatt Centric Key West. Since 2023, the two have collaborated on The Infinite Bottle Project, a circularity platform offering full traceability for aluminum recycling. To date, the initiative has recovered over 4,300 pounds of aluminum from the resort property and the surrounding area.

This approach supports Hyatt Centric Key West’s goal to eliminate single-use plastics on property while also providing financial and operational support to Reef Relief. Hector Ortiz, General Manager of the resort, noted that protecting the surrounding environment is core to both guest experience and long-term business sustainability. "As a premier resort destination, our pristine beaches and vibrant marine life are integral to the breathtaking natural ecosystem we proudly share with our guests."

As more hospitality and CPG brands seek to demonstrate credible sustainability leadership, the practical example offered by this partnership combines operational action, traceable results, and community engagement—elements that are increasingly expected by environmentally conscious travelers and stakeholders.
