In a bold move that positions ALDI at the forefront of sustainability in the grocery retail sector, the ALDI SOUTH Group has announced its goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. This commitment, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), makes ALDI one of the first international grocery retailers to set such ambitious and comprehensive targets.

A Roadmap to Net-Zero

ALDI's path to net-zero emissions is marked by a series of strategic milestones. The company aims to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which result from its stores and direct operations, by 90% by 2035 from a 2021 base year. For Scope 3 emissions, which stem from ALDI's broader value chain, the target is a 90% reduction by 2050 from a 2022 base year.

ALDI SOUTH Group is breaking new ground by setting specific targets for Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) emissions. The company plans to reduce both Scope 1 and Scope 3 FLAG emissions by 72% by 2050, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the environmental impact of its agricultural supply chain.

Innovative Approaches to Emissions Reduction

To achieve these ambitious targets, ALDI is focusing on several key areas where it can make the most significant impact. The company recognizes that the majority of its emissions come from its supply chain and is therefore prioritizing partnerships with suppliers to drive decarbonization efforts.

One innovative approach is ALDI's participation in the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy's Dairy Sustainability Alliance. This collaboration aims to identify potential solutions for reducing emissions from dairy production, highlighting ALDI's commitment to working with industry partners to address complex sustainability challenges.

ALDI is also making strides in transportation and refrigeration. The company is exploring the use of alternative fuel sources and electric trucks for its logistics operations. In its stores, ALDI is transitioning to natural refrigerants, with over 700 stores already using this technology, resulting in a 60% reduction in potential carbon emissions each year.

By setting these industry-leading goals and implementing innovative strategies, ALDI is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and setting a new standard for the grocery retail sector.
