Waste Giants Join Forces to Revolutionize Plastic Recycling in Europe

Posted

In a groundbreaking move, waste management leader Renewi and advanced recycling specialist Freepoint Eco-Systems have announced their intention to collaborate on a large-scale plastic recycling initiative in Europe. This strategic partnership aims to address the growing challenge of end-of-life plastics by developing new sorting and treatment infrastructure.

The centerpiece of this collaboration is Freepoint Eco-Systems' planned advanced recycling facility in Ghent, Belgium. Set to be the company's first such plant in Europe, it will utilize pyrolysis technology to break down complex, mixed plastics that are typically difficult to recycle through conventional means. Renewi will play a crucial role in supplying 80,000 tons of feedstock annually for this facility, effectively diverting a significant amount of plastic waste from incineration.

This partnership represents a major step forward in bridging the gap between waste management and product manufacturing, aligning with Europe's circular economy goals and emerging regulations on recycled content in new products.

Cutting-Edge Technology Drives Sustainable Solutions

At the heart of this initiative is the proposed development of a state-of-the-art sorting facility. Drawing on Renewi's expertise and experience with its existing residual waste sorting line, the new facility will employ innovative techniques to transform various end-of-life plastic sources into high-quality feedstock for advanced recycling.

One notable aspect of the planned sorting line is its potential use of residual heat from the advanced recycling plant, showcasing the partners' commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability. This approach not only maximizes resource utilization but also demonstrates the potential for synergies between different stages of the recycling process.

By creating a consistent and high-quality feedstock from previously hard-to-recycle plastics, this collaboration aims to significantly increase overall plastic recycling rates while complementing existing mechanical recycling processes.

The partnership between Renewi and Freepoint Eco-Systems exemplifies the power of cross-industry collaboration in tackling complex environmental challenges. By combining Renewi's waste management expertise with Freepoint Eco-Systems' advanced recycling technology, the two companies are poised to make a substantial impact on Europe's circular economy and contribute to global efforts to reduce plastic waste and carbon emissions.
