A former landfill site at 180 Johnson Street has been transformed into a solar farm, marking asi gnificant milestone in Middletown’s commitment to sustainability. Developed by West Hartford-based solar company Verogy, the 809 kW DC solar energy system will generate over 1 million kWh of clean energy annually—enough to power approximately 105 homes.
Verogy CEO Will Herchel emphasized the innovative approach behind the project, stating, “Where some see an unused space, we see potential. Our collaboration with the City of Middletown demonstrates how underutilized land can become a productive asset that supports local economies, reduces carbon emissions, and bolsters sustainability efforts.”
Located on a 2.5-acre capped landfill, the solar project is projected to offset approximately 712 metric tons of carbon emissions annually, the equivalent of the greenhouse gases produced by 88,000 gallons of gasoline. Middletown Mayor Ben Florsheim celebrated the project, highlighting its dual benefits:
“This solar installation exemplifies Middletown’s dedication to sustainability and economic savings. Not only are we reducing our carbon footprint, but we are also lowering energy costs—creating a cleaner, greener, and more economically sustainable future for our community.”
State and local leaders joined Middletown officials at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to acknowledge the city’s ongoing efforts to integrate clean energy solutions into its infrastructure.
