Smurfit WestRock, a global leader in sustainable packaging, continues to make significant strides in innovation and sustainability. Formed through the merger of Smurfit Kappa and WestRock, the company operates in 40 countries, employs over 100,000 people, and is committed to producing renewable and recyclable packaging solutions.

Paris 2024: A Showcase of Circular Economy Practices

This year, Smurfit WestRock partnered with Airweave to provide over 16,000 recyclable bed frames for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. These bed frames, constructed from 36 paper-based components, were locally manufactured to minimize emissions and support the regional economy.

After the Games, the frames were collected, recycled, and repurposed into 1.5 million wine boxes.

Additionally, Smurfit WestRock has partnered with Pizza Hut to promote pizza box recycling, addressing misconceptions about its recyclability. This initiative, launched in Louisville, Kentucky, encouraged responsible recycling practices, contributing to reduced landfill waste and heightened environmental awareness among customers.

A Stronghold in France

Smurfit WestRock’s presence in France is a testament to its operational strength and sustainability focus. With nearly 50 manufacturing sites and over 6,000 employees, the company serves more than 7,000 customers nationwide.

In 2024, the company received the Best Irish Company in France award at the Ireland France Business Awards, acknowledging its significant contributions to the local economy and innovative approach to packaging. Andrew Coffey, CEO of Smurfit WestRock France, remarked:

“2024 has been an exciting year for us, both in becoming Smurfit WestRock and supporting the sustainability ambitions of Paris 2024. I’m proud of the significant presence we have established in this country and the dedication of our talented team.”

Fostering Sustainability and Partnerships

As part of its broader community efforts, Smurfit WestRock has launched programs such as ReCreo in Argentina, which educates schoolchildren about recycling and recovered over 300 tons of materials in three years. Its partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation has also led to the planting of over 400 trees in urban communities.

By leveraging its expanded global presence and comprehensive product offerings, the company is well-positioned to meet the evolving demands of the packaging industry, focusing on sustainability and innovation to drive long-term value for stakeholders.
