Pilot, GM, and EVgo Scale EV Charging for Interstate and Long-Distance Travel

Posted

As EV adoption accelerates across the U.S., the need for accessible, reliable charging infrastructure has become a critical factor in enabling long-distance travel and consumer confidence. In response, Pilot Company, General Motors, and EVgo Inc. have announced a major milestone in their collaborative charging network: more than 130 fast-charging locations are now operational across over 25 states.

This network, strategically placed along major interstates and travel corridors, is designed to support the growing number of EV drivers navigating seasonal road trips, including spring break and summer vacation routes. Key travel corridors now covered include I-75 from Michigan to Georgia and regional links from Minneapolis to Milwaukee, Detroit to Cleveland, and Texas routes connecting San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and Nashville.

Business Strategy Meets Energy Innovation

The charging network reflects a multi-faceted strategy to align infrastructure expansion with consumer travel behavior.

Pilot’s senior vice president of alternative fuels, Shannon Sturgil, emphasized the company’s role in addressing a growing infrastructure gap:

“Our travel centers are uniquely able to fill a need for EV owners who are looking to make the most of their miles.”

The collaboration—first announced in 2022—aims to install up to 2,000 fast-charging stalls at 500 Pilot and Flying J locations nationwide. This ambitious buildout is part of a broader effort to address range anxiety and promote a seamless travel experience for EV drivers.

Infrastructure Designed for Driver Convenience

Unlike many standalone charging locations, Pilot’s EV charging stations are embedded within full-service travel centers, offering 24/7 amenities such as:

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Modern restrooms
  • Lounges and food courts
  • Grocery and convenience retail
  • Pull-through and canopy-covered charging stalls ideal for trailers

EVgo’s high-power fast chargers, capable of delivering up to 350 kW, enable some vehicles to recharge in as little as 15 minutes.* Seamless charging integration through Plug and Charge technology simplifies the user experience for compatible EVs, allowing drivers to charge without swiping cards or using mobile apps.

Scaling with Demand: A Market-Driven Approach

EV sales reached a record 1.3 million in 2024, with the final quarter showing a 15% increase over Q4 2023. General Motors played a significant role in this growth, with GM brand EVs recording a 50% sales surge in the same period.

According to Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy, this momentum is influencing infrastructure strategy:

“With more than 130 locations now open, which customers can easily find using the GM brand app, we’re helping ensure that charging is seamless and convenient—so drivers can focus on the adventure ahead.”

Consumer response has also validated the approach. Charging sites consistently receive high ratings on PlugShare, with drivers praising both the speed and convenience of the Pilot-Flying J experience.

Bridging the Urban-Rural Divide

EVgo President Dennis Kish highlighted the broader impact of the collaboration on underserved regions:

“We’re delivering a customer-centric charging experience across our country’s most traveled corridors, building new infrastructure to connect rural, urban and suburban communities.”

As demand for EVs continues to rise, the Pilot-GM-EVgo partnership serves as a scalable model for integrating charging infrastructure into existing commercial footprints—ensuring long-term viability and supporting the transition to a low-carbon transportation system.

Questions About Government Policies

President Donald Trump's recent executive actions have introduced significant changes to federal policies supporting EV infrastructure. While the partnership between Pilot Company, GM, and EVgo to expand EV fast-charging stations is privately funded, these policy shifts could still have indirect effects on their collaborative efforts and similar future initiatives.
