KBR Partners with Avina Clean Hydrogen for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Project in the US

Posted

KBR has announced that Avina Clean Hydrogen Inc. has selected the innovative PureSAF technology for its new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project in the United States. Developed by Swedish Biofuels, PureSAF is licensed exclusively by KBR worldwide and is set to revolutionize the production of SAF through its advanced capabilities.

Project Scope and Objectives

As part of the contract, KBR will deliver technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, and front-end engineering design (FEED) services. This initiative aims to establish Avina's facility capable of producing 120 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel per year. This significant production capacity highlights the growing demand for cleaner and more efficient aviation fuels.

PureSAF is an advanced technology that produces jet fuel fully compatible with conventional jet fuel. It leverages various feedstocks at a low cost and on an industrial scale. According to Angelica Hull, Managing Director of Swedish Biofuels, the technology can process ethanol, mixed alcohols, carbon dioxide, and synthesis gas into SAF. This flexibility allows for utilizing captured carbon, significantly contributing to a more sustainable future.

Jay Ibrahim, President of KBR's Sustainable Technology Solutions, expressed enthusiasm about expanding the collaboration with Avina as the company ventures into the SAF market. In 2023, Avina chose KBR's K-GreeN technology for its green ammonia project in the US. Avina's leadership in energy transition projects aligns with KBR's dedication to decarbonization technologies and advancing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives. KBR looks forward to aiding Avina in diversifying into other high-potential sustainable growth sectors alongside Swedish Biofuels.

Strategic Selection of Innovative Technology

Vishal Shah, CEO of Avina Clean Hydrogen, highlighted the selection of KBR's innovative aviation fuel technology for their ethanol-to-sustainable jet fuel project in Illinois. PureSAF's economic advantages, low carbon intensity, and environmental benefits make it an ideal choice compared to other technologies.

KBR continues to lead the way in pioneering decarbonization efforts through continuous process innovation and low-carbon technology utilization to reduce emissions effectively. In 2024, KBR is celebrating 100 years of delivering clean fuel solutions, underscoring its long-standing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
