Green Bay Packers Partner with Batteries Plus for Sustainability Drive

Posted

The Green Bay Packers have partnered with Batteries Plus, the nation’s leading specialty battery retailer, to launch an impactful battery recycling initiative to educate and raise awareness among Packers fans. The partnership was announced at Lambeau Field. U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and representatives from the Department of Energy were in attendance, showcasing their support for this significant initiative.

Engaging Fans and Schools

Fans are encouraged to bring their used batteries to local Batteries Plus stores for free recycling drop-offs. Wisconsin recyclers can win prizes and experiences, including the opportunity to present the game ball at a Packers home game. Additionally, Wisconsin schools are invited to participate in battery recycling contests, with the winning classroom receiving an exclusive Lambeau Field experience. Fans can also visit the Batteries Plus display on the Fan Walkway at Lambeau Field before events, including Saturday’s Family Night and the games on September 29 and October 13. The display will provide entertainment and information about battery recycling.

Supporting Battery Recycling Nationwide

Supported by a $7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, this initiative aims to increase battery recycling nationwide by removing financial barriers, enhancing operational efficiencies, and educating communities on responsible recycling. “This grant is a pivotal step in our mission to make battery recycling accessible and mainstream,” said Scott Williams, CEO of Batteries Plus. “By eliminating recycling fees and developing advanced recycling workstations, we're making it easier for consumers to contribute to preserving our natural resources and strengthening our domestic supply chain."

Packers’ Commitment to Sustainability

"The Green Bay Packers are proud to be a part of this vital initiative," said Aaron Popkey, Packers director of public affairs. "We recognize the importance of sustainability and are committed to promoting responsible recycling practices among our fans." The Packers have a strong history of sustainability initiatives, such as the First Downs for Trees program and energy-efficient upgrades at Lambeau Field, including new boilers, HVAC systems, lighting, kitchen equipment, and recycling and landfill diversion programs.

The First Downs for Trees program by the Green Bay Packers, Essity, and Green Bay Packaging Inc. donates trees to northeast Wisconsin communities based on the team’s first downs during the regular season. In 2024, 402 trees were donated to 16 communities. Since 2011, over 7,000 trees have been planted, providing environmental benefits like reduced stormwater runoff, CO2 reduction, and improved air quality. The program involves local nurseries and receives support from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Wisconsin Public Service. It also offsets the carbon emissions from the Packers’ air travel to road games, enhancing green spaces and fostering community engagement
