Graymont and Fortera Launch Scalable Low-Carbon Cement

New partnership delivers retrofit-ready cement tech without rebuilds

Calcium solutions provider Graymont has entered a strategic partnership with green cement developer Fortera. The collaboration brings Fortera’s carbon mineralization technology to Graymont’s global operations, with a focus on integrating sustainable cement production into existing infrastructure—no major equipment overhauls required.

At the core of the partnership is Fortera’s ReCarb process, which converts industrial CO₂ into a low-carbon cement alternative called ReAct. ReCarb is designed for bolt-on deployment, unlike some climate tech that demands extensive capital upgrades. Fortera’s 15,000-ton-per-year site in Redding, California has already demonstrated how the system functions within current cement and lime operations, utilizing traditional feedstocks and equipment to produce cement that meets regulatory and performance standards.

Graymont’s extensive supply chain and manufacturing footprint across North America and Asia Pacific provides a strong platform to scale Fortera’s solution globally.

Stéphane Godin, President and CEO at Graymont expressed that “We’ve spent more than 75 years building a global calcium solutions business, and this partnership allows us to continue to lead the way in innovative and sustainable products for our customers.”

The collaboration positions both firms to deliver industrial-grade, low-carbon cement across construction and infrastructure markets without disrupting existing operations.

Commercial Readiness and Industry-Wide Potential

The construction sector, under pressure to reduce carbon output, has often been stalled by the financial and logistical barriers tied to sustainable tech adoption. What makes this partnership notable is its focus on commercial viability and minimal operational disruption.

Graymont expands its portfolio with a CO₂ utilization technology that fits into its existing manufacturing lines—an important consideration for firms unwilling or unable to rebuild operations from the ground up. Fortera’s ReAct cement, already validated over more than a decade, offers performance parity with traditional Portland cement and is suitable for mainstream construction and industrial applications.

Fortera’s CEO Ryan Gilliam notes that Graymont’s involvement confirms the industrial readiness of the technology. "From day one, the collaboration with the Graymont team has been instrumental in shaping the commercial design of our plants, from scalability to reliable operations, and in expanding our product opportunities. Together, we're showing that it's possible to cut cement emissions in an economic way."

With Grupo Calidra also in Graymont’s network through a strategic Latin American partnership, this model for sustainable cement has the infrastructure in place to scale rapidly and globally.
