For many low-income residents in New Mexico, high utility costs—which can consume up to 30% of household income—force difficult trade-offs between essentials like food, healthcare, and electricity. Prosperity Works, known for its commitment to economic stability, views community solar programs as a powerful solution for reducing energy burdens.
Through this partnership, Chaberton Energy, recently recognized as the fastest-growing community solar developer in the U.S., brings its expertise in sustainable infrastructure to ensure affordable, renewable energy reaches those who need it most.
The first project, Lake Jody, is under construction in Deming, New Mexico, within the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) service territory. With a capacity of 2.8 MW direct current (MWdc), it will generate enough electricity to power approximately 650 households.
A key feature of this project is its focus on low-income energy access—50% of subscribers will be low-income residents, benefiting from a 30% discount on their electricity bills. This affordability makes clean energy more accessible while helping families reduce their monthly expenses.
Beyond Lake Jody, Prosperity Works and Chaberton Energy have four additional community solar projects planned for the cities of Alamogordo, Belen, Lordsburg, and Silver City.
These projects will contribute a total of 28 MWdc to New Mexico’s energy grid, significantly expanding renewable energy access for residents statewide.
This initiative falls under the New Mexico Community Solar Program, established by the Community Solar Act (2021), which aims to add 500 MW of community solar capacity as part of the state’s clean energy strategy. By allowing individuals to subscribe to solar energy without requiring home solar panel installations, this program ensures an inclusive transition to renewable power.
