Eastman and Kolmar Korea Push Biodegradable Beauty Forward

New partnership targets sustainable alternatives in color cosmetics

Posted

A new collaboration between Eastman and Kolmar Korea could accelerate the shift toward biodegradable materials in cosmetics. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in January, focused on advancing sustainable, high-performance alternatives to synthetic polymers—particularly in color cosmetics, where both regulatory and consumer pressures are rising.

At the center of the effort is Eastman’s Esmeri cellulose ester technology, a biodegradable micropowder aimed at replacing conventional synthetic particles. Esmeri CC1N10, one of the first commercial options, has passed OECD 301B testing and aligns with current EU biodegradation standards. It offers formulators a way to reduce microplastic content without compromising feel or function.

Rather than asking brands to sacrifice performance in the name of sustainability, Eastman’s positioning is clear: Esmeri is a forward-compatible material designed to meet both compliance and consumer expectations. The broader Esmeri portfolio also extends across skincare, haircare, sun care, and fragrance applications, giving manufacturers a wider toolbox as sustainability targets come into focus.

Manufacturing Scale Meets Sustainable Demand

Kolmar Korea brings the industrial know-how needed to scale new materials efficiently. As a top-tier original development manufacturer (ODM), it’s well-placed to translate emerging material technologies into finished products for beauty brands worldwide. This includes not only formulation and product development, but also manufacturing and market readiness.

Kolmar’s role in the agreement is about operationalizing Eastman’s materials—folding them into existing development pipelines and responding quickly to evolving global trends, especially within the fast-moving K-beauty sector. The company’s broader commitment to sustainable practices also makes it a relevant partner as clients look to align with tightening environmental regulations without delaying product launches.

By embedding biodegradable materials into the early stages of formulation, Kolmar can help brands balance product innovation with compliance and consumer appeal. This agreement is a framework for cross-functional collaboration that bridges lab innovation with real-world manufacturing.
