Amalgamated Bank Invests $25M in Rooftop Solar Expansion

Redball Energy to deploy 30MW of solar for 4,400 low-income homes

Amalgamated Bank has announced a $25 million investment in Redball EnergyCo, LLC as part of a $50 million financing round aimed at deploying over 30 megawatts of rooftop solar in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Connecticut. The initiative will serve more than 4,400 households, delivering zero-cost solar energy directly to residents in low- and moderate-income communities.

This deal marks a strategic alignment between two organizations focused on advancing the clean energy transition in a way that centers community impact. Redball Energy’s model prioritizes local economic development, grid resilience, and energy affordability—key pillars for scaling distributed solar infrastructure in underserved regions. By enabling households to access renewable energy without ownership or upfront costs, the project is structured to reduce utility burdens and support long-term climate resilience.

Amalgamated’s involvement underscores a growing role for financial institutions in shaping inclusive climate solutions. Rather than treating clean energy as a standalone asset class, the bank is integrating environmental and social criteria into its broader lending strategy—without sidelining market performance. This latest commitment follows its participation in larger-scale renewable financing, such as Greenbacker’s 674 MW Cider Solar project, highlighting an ongoing pivot toward values-based investment with measurable impact.

Redball’s Development Platform Targets Underserved Solar Markets

Founded in 2020, Redball Energy has focused on combining financial structuring capabilities with a community-first approach to solar development. Through its proprietary REDBASE platform, the company currently manages more than 3,000 solar assets across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions.

Redball’s development strategy is aimed at neighborhoods historically excluded from clean energy ownership. The current 30 MW rollout supported by Amalgamated will provide solar systems at no cost to homeowners, with the environmental and economic benefits—including energy savings and local job creation—flowing directly into the communities served.

The company sees this funding round as an opportunity to scale its model across multiple states, reinforcing its view that equitable access to clean energy can be both financially viable and operationally scalable. The partnership with Amalgamated is designed to leverage private capital for public benefit, creating a framework that could be replicated by other regional players in the clean energy space.
