Banc of California Stadium - home of Major League Soccer’s newest expansion team, Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) - has received LEED Gold certification for building practices, LAFC announced. These include a building design consisting of 15% recycled materials, with 10% sourced locally, low-emitting materials used for adhesives, sealants, paints and coatings, and a 97% diversion of total construction and demolition debris, equating to 28,906 tons diverted from the landfill.

LAFC also said the project reduced energy consumption by 30% and water consumption by 40%, compared to traditional buildings.

LAFC worked with global architecture, design and planning firm Gensler during the design process to ensure that sustainable elements of the project were prioritized and retained to achieve this result, the organization says.

Sports venues old and new across the US are becoming increasingly sustainable. Such projects include:

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons

Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles

State Farm Arena, home of the Atlanta Hawks

The multipurpose Bentley Arena, at Bentley University

Wisconsin Entertainment & Sports Center, home of the Milwaukee Bucks
