Combined heat and power (CHP) is getting quite a boost: When it is finished this autumn, the tallest hotel in the United Kingdom will use CHP to provide heat and hot water.
Veolia’s technology will be used at the Novatel London Canary Wharf hotel, which will be 39 stories high and have 313 guest rooms, according to Veolia. The tower, which will be almost 420 feet tall, also will feature conference facilities, restaurants and a bar.
In addition to cutting energy costs, use of CHP in the 19,000 square-meter facility will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 213 tons annually. Veolia says that it provides CHP services to more than 110 hotels in the U.K.
Hotels' energy demands include room heating and cooling, restaurants, internal offices, conference services, food services and, in some cases, laundries. This broad-based need makes them a good market for innovative energy technologies.
