Bowman to Map Southeast Post-Hurricane with USGS Contract

Lidar project spans 8,800+ square miles across four storm-hit states

The U.S. Geological Survey has awarded Bowman a significant contract to collect aerial lidar data across more than 8,800 square miles in parts of Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and South Carolina—regions heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene. Partnering with Colorado-based Merrick & Company, the two firms will carry out one of the latest initiatives under the federal 3D Elevation Program (3DEP), which is working toward a full, high-resolution topographic map of the U.S.

Bowman will lead aerial data collection and lidar processing, while Merrick oversees project management, survey coordination, and quality assurance. Both firms bring deep experience to the table—Bowman with high-precision geospatial collection, Merrick with oversight of complex mapping projects. The pairing allows each company to focus on its strengths, streamlining data delivery to meet tight federal specifications.

This type of detailed elevation data plays a critical role in supporting post-disaster assessments, infrastructure planning, and long-term climate resilience—especially as the Southeast faces more frequent extreme weather events. The lidar output will assist agencies like the U.S. Forest Service in assessing environmental damage and planning recovery efforts.

Federal 3DEP Program Offers Long-Term Revenue and Growth Potential

Bowman's role in the USGS Geospatial Products and Services Contract (GPSC4) reflects the company's growing foothold in high-value federal mapping initiatives. GPSC4 is a selective contract pool, with only ten companies nationwide approved to participate. For Bowman, that exclusivity has translated into access to recurring task orders and stable long-term revenue opportunities.

Since entering the program, Bowman has processed over 150,000 square miles of lidar data under GPSC4, contributing to a wide range of federal use cases. The current contract extends through 2026, with additional task orders expected this fiscal year.

Gary Bowman, founder and CEO of Bowman shares that “This award reinforces the strategic value of our long-term federal partnerships and our positioning within high-barrier-to-entry programs like GPSC4. Each task order generates reoccurring revenue and strengthens our leadership in delivering geospatial data that informs national infrastructure and resilience planning.”
