EMAS is considered the most demanding environmental management system globally, overseen in Germany by the Federal Ministry for the Environment. Under Senior Sustainability Manager Tobias Wolf, Bavaria Fiction’s team coordinates environmental measures across energy, water, travel, fleet, resources, and waste, aiming for continuous CO₂ reductions.
“We’re more than thrilled that we are the first production company of this scale to be validated by EMAS,” said Managing Directors Marcus Ammon and Jan S. Kaiser in the August 2025 press release. “EMAS enables us to benchmark ourselves through regular assessments, measure progress, and proactively address improvements.”
Since introducing the system, CO₂ emissions at Munich headquarters have dropped 3% year-on-year—from 381 to 369 tonnes. Electrifying the company-car fleet cut related emissions by more than 13%, from 44 to 38 tonnes. By 2027, Bavaria Fiction aims to cut energy and heat consumption by 4% and business-travel-related CO₂ emissions by 5%.
Wolf emphasized that sustainable practices are already standard on sets, adding, “With our EMAS validation, we now take a holistic view of sustainability at the company level—with clear goals, structured processes, and measurable progress.”
A member of Germany’s “Green Shooting” working group, Bavaria Fiction applies the Ecological Standards for Green Production, developed with broadcasters, production companies, VoD platforms, and film funders. Since 2022, over 50 productions have met these standards, with several earning the external Green Motion label audited by PwC.

The EMAS validation aligns with Germany’s target of 5,000 EMAS sites by 2030, underscoring the role of media production in advancing climate goals.
