Autonomous Maritime Systems Gain New AI Capabilities

Posted

Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) and Mythos AI have formed a new partnership to integrate advanced autonomy software across OPT’s WAM-V® autonomous surface vessels and PowerBuoy® platforms. The collaboration positions OPT to deliver more capable, modular, and persistent maritime systems as demand for intelligent ocean technologies accelerates across defense, offshore energy, and commercial operations.

The agreement expands OPT’s autonomy ecosystem by combining its platform engineering with Mythos AI’s real-time edge processing, multi-sensor fusion, and adaptive learning architecture. Initial demonstrations are planned for early 2026, with applications ranging from maritime domain awareness to low-emission offshore operations.

Strengthening Autonomy Across Maritime Operations

The unmanned surface vehicles (USV) market specifically is estimated at $0.82 billion in 2025, expected to reach $1.59 billion by 2030 (CAGR ~14.1%).  While the global unmanned systems market (all domains: air, ground, surface, underwater) is valued at about $28 billion and projected to reach $43 billion by 2030, driven by defense, surveillance, and commercial automation.

OPT has steadily expanded its role in the autonomous maritime sector, particularly through systems that combine persistent power, communications, and sensor integration. The addition of Mythos AI’s software layer adds mission flexibility and improved situational awareness across challenging and data-dense environments.

The companies say the upgraded autonomy stack will support:

  • High-precision navigation and obstacle avoidance
  • Multi-vehicle coordination
  • Real-time data fusion across sensor suites
  • Future phases of vessel-to-buoy collaboration for extended endurance missions

This approach mirrors broader trends across the maritime intelligence sector.

Philipp Stratmann, President and CEO of OPT, that combining OPT’s platforms with Mythos AI’s autonomy “should strengthen our ability to deliver high-performance autonomous maritime systems that are flexible, scalable, and ready for real-world missions.”

Rising Demand for Intelligent and Persistent Ocean Systems

Defense, offshore wind, subsea monitoring, and environmental research all represent fast-growing markets for autonomous maritime systems. The U.S. Navy has expanded its investment in uncrewed surface vehicles since FY2023, and the Department of Energy continues funding ocean-observation platforms that support offshore wind planning and environmental data collection.

The OPT–Mythos AI partnership aligns with these trends by offering a modular architecture that combines:

  • Renewable or hybrid power generation
  • On-platform AI processing
  • Seamless integration of maritime domain awareness systems through OPT’s Merrows™ technology

Mythos AI CEO Geoff Douglass said the partnership will “push the boundaries of intelligent autonomy on the water” by pairing software-driven capabilities with field-proven hardware.

A Broader Strategy for Integrated Maritime Intelligence

OPT’s strategy in recent years has centered on providing end-to-end solutions rather than standalone platforms. Its PowerBuoy systems supply reliable offshore power and data communications, while WAM-V autonomous vessels are increasingly used for hydrography, environmental surveys, and defense missions.

Integrating a unified autonomy framework across these assets strengthens OPT’s value proposition as operators look for turnkey systems that reduce operational costs and increase mission reliability.
