Global toy company Melissa & Doug has joined the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) and How2Recycle and will begin rolling out How2Recycle labels on its packaging by the end of this year. This initiative is meant to help Melissa & Doug reach its goal for 95% of its product packaging to be curbside recyclable by the end of 2025, the company says.

SPC is a membership-based collaborative that believes in “the power of industry to make packaging more sustainable.” Its How2Recycle label program began in 2008 and aims to take the guesswork out of recycling by providing clear and standardized labels that enable companies to convey to consumers how to dispose of a package.

Melissa & Doug had also made a commitment to ensure 100% of paper products and more than half of its wood products sold are from responsibly managed forests by 2025. However, they will surpass that goal by producing all of their paper and top selling wood products in 2022 as FSC certified, improving the company’s overall economic value, it says.

Last year the company partnered with One Tree Planted, a global reforestation program that will plant a tree for every tree used by the company each year. The initiative, called “Project Restore,” was created as part of their commitment to become carbon neutral in its operations by the end of 2021.

Palmolive partnered with How2Recycle recently in a move to divert more than 5,200 tons of plastic a year from landfills in the US and Canada and help the company in its drive to achieve a circular economy. Other companies that have partnered with How2Recycle include Nature Valley and Keurig Dr Pepper.
