Duke Energy and Duke University have agreed to a contract under which a 21 MW natural gas fed combined heat and power (CHP) plant will be built on the university’s campus.
The 35-year agreement must be approved by the North Carolina Utilities Commission. If it is approved and the plant built, Duke Energy Carolinas will own, build and operate the facility. The story at Duke Today says that the system will produce about 75,000 pounds per hour of steam, which can be used for hot water heating and other purposes. The system could be online in 2018
Duke Energy and Duke University trace their roots to James B. Duke, who lived from 1856 to 1925, the story says.
Last month, The North Carolina Utility Commission issued a declaratory order ruling that third parties are prohibited from installing a solar system and selling the power produced to a non-profit entity. This is a Duke Energy, which had argued that state law prohibits electricity sales by any organization other than a utility.
