FuelCell Energy will install a 5.6 MW fuel cell power generation system for Pfizer, according to the company.
The fuel cell will be installed at Pfizer’s 160-acre research and development facility in Groton, CT. Under a power purchase agreement, the biopharmaceutical company will buy power and steam from FuelCell for 20 years. The fuel cell will be part of a combined heat and power (CHP) system that will run in parallel with the grid and provide standby power in case of outages. The system, which will be operational by the summer, includes two DFC30000 fuel cell power plants rated at 2.8 MW each.
CHP has not taken off in Minnesota. However, Fresh Energy Senior Policy Associate Will Nissen thinks it is well positioned to do so. The key is to create local market demand for the abundant harvested wood in the state.
