Vale Advances Rail Decarbonization with Wabtec Locomotive Deal

Posted

As industrial sectors face mounting pressure to decarbonize, Vale is accelerating its transition to cleaner rail transport. The company announced it will acquire 50 high-efficiency Evolution Series locomotives from Wabtec Corporation, marking a key advancement in its strategy to lower emissions across Brazil’s freight rail corridors.

The new engines—36 for the Vitória a Minas Railroad (EFVM) and 14 for the Carajás Railroad (EFC)—represent a significant upgrade to Vale’s fleet. Designed to run on higher biodiesel blends, the locomotives will be manufactured at Wabtec’s Contagem facility, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2026.

“The renewal and modernization plan for the EFVM and EFC fleet is premised on contributing to the future of decarbonization in the rail sector,” said Carlos Medeiros, Vale’s Vice President of Operations.

Freight Rail Modernization Meets Climate Targets

The order underscores a shift in the freight rail industry toward climate-aligned innovation. By investing in locomotives capable of supporting alternative fuels, Vale is not only modernizing its assets but also reducing its long-term emissions footprint. This approach supports the company’s broader climate objectives, including a 33% cut in operational emissions by 2030 and net zero by mid-century.

The locomotives—EVOBBW and ES58ACi models—are among the most advanced in Wabtec’s portfolio. They feature AC traction systems that increase hauling power by over 50%, while extending fuel efficiency and reducing the frequency of maintenance. Their enhanced biodiesel compatibility also allows Vale to explore higher fuel blend ratios over time, enabling a more flexible, phased transition away from diesel.

Technology that Moves with the Energy Transition

Wabtec has positioned itself as a key player in rail’s energy transformation. Its focus on high-performance engines that integrate emissions-reduction technologies aligns with a growing push from private and public sectors to decarbonize freight systems.

“We are proud to support Vale and our customers with advanced technologies that reduce CO2 emissions and promote operational efficiency,” said Danilo Miyasato, President of Wabtec LATAM. “We are investing in the development of engines that use alternative fuels, for a future of zero-emission rail transport.”

Beyond emissions reductions, the new locomotives offer gains in ergonomics, maintenance accessibility, and long-term cost performance—important considerations as operators balance sustainability with operational resilience.

A Broader Push for Cleaner Logistics

Rail is often cited as one of the most energy-efficient forms of land freight, yet its decarbonization potential hinges on upgrading aging infrastructure and fleets. Vale’s investment highlights how mining and heavy industry are starting to act on this potential—not just for compliance, but as part of a long-term competitiveness strategy.

The EFVM and EFC lines span more than 1,600 kilometers and form the backbone of Vale’s logistics network, moving iron ore, fuels, and other critical commodities. Updating the locomotives on these lines represents a substantial emissions reduction opportunity for one of the world’s largest mining companies.
