UK Firm to Install Subsea Power Link for Belize Islands

OMSI to connect San Pedro and Caye Caulker to mainland power grid.

UK-based subsea services specialist OMSI has been awarded a key contract to oversee the engineering, procurement, and construction of a subsea power infrastructure project in Belize. The initiative will integrate the tourism-driven islands of San Pedro and Caye Caulker into the mainland power grid through the installation of an 11-kilometer, 34.5kV submarine cable across the Caribbean Sea.

The project addresses a critical issue, as each island currently operates on standalone power systems that face increasing strain from rising energy demands. Connecting these islands to the mainland grid—where nearly half of electricity is generated from hydroelectric sources—should enhance supply reliability and advance Belize’s transition toward cleaner energy solutions.

Enhancing Grid Stability and Climate Resilience

Beyond delivering a more consistent power supply, the subsea cable project is part of a broader strategy to fortify Belize’s energy infrastructure against climate-related disruptions. As the Caribbean region experiences more frequent and severe weather events, strengthening interconnections between power networks will improve grid resilience and mitigate the risks associated with isolated generation systems.

By reducing reliance on localized, fossil fuel-dependent power sources, the project aligns with Belize’s long-term energy strategy. The initiative is expected to provide cost efficiencies for both residential and commercial consumers while supporting economic development in the region.

Project Execution and Technical Expertise

OMSI brings extensive experience to the Belize project, leveraging a track record of more than 450 completed projects across four continents. The company commenced project planning in early 2024 and completed the Marine Route Survey in August, ensuring a structured approach to execution.

The firm’s scope of work spans all project phases, from initial engineering and procurement to offshore installation. OMSI’s integrated offshore solutions, including survey support and subsea cable deployment, will play a critical role in addressing the complexities of energy infrastructure development in the Caribbean. With over 10 million offshore project man-hours completed, OMSI is well-positioned to deliver this essential grid modernization effort.

The project is scheduled for completion in Spring 2025, marking a significant step in Belize’s broader push for energy security and sustainability.
