Student-Led Sustainability Powers Ontario School to Top Eco Recognition

Posted

Caledon Central Public School has earned Platinum Certification from EcoSchools Canada for the third year in a row—recognition of the school’s long-term commitment to environmental education, operational sustainability, and student-led initiatives. Scoring 148.5 points—well above the 101-point threshold—positions the Ontario-based school among Canada’s top-performing institutions for climate action at the K–12 level.

A major contributor to the school’s certification was its annual Eco Week, which featured five themed days of environmental programming. These included community cleanups, water conservation campaigns, outdoor learning experiences, and student-led advocacy events. The integrated format connected classroom instruction with hands-on environmental action, engaging students and staff across grade levels.

The school also operates indoor Grow Towers that produced herbs and leafy greens for school clubs and families. Outside, the pollinator garden was expanded with the addition of five native plant species, supporting biodiversity and aligning with national efforts to create greener school grounds. A student-maintained vegetable garden further supports outdoor education and sustainable food literacy.

Community partnerships continue to be a core part of Caledon Central’s sustainability strategy. Collaborations with Eco Caledon, Peel Public Health, and local farms support initiatives in waste reduction, healthy eating, and air quality. Albion Hills Community Farm, Davis Feed and Farm, Dixie Orchards, and St. John Ambulance provided additional resources and engagement opportunities. Support from the school’s council and trustee Stan Cameron helped fund student participation in off-site environmental programming such as the Water Festival.

Student leadership remains a defining aspect of the school’s approach. The Save the Planet Club includes 25 students from across all grade levels who coordinate composting, recycling, upcycling projects, and awareness campaigns. These students play an active role in shaping the school’s sustainability priorities and educating their peers.

Caledon Central’s efforts align with the Peel District School Board’s Environmental Stewardship goals and reflect the broader national movement toward experiential climate education. In 2023–2024, EcoSchools Canada reported participation from over 760,000 students across the country. Caledon Central stands out for its consistent results, integrated programming, and commitment to building a culture of environmental responsibility.
