Solar Power Shines Bright in Middletown’s Sustainability Efforts

Transforming Unused Spaces into Renewable Energy Hubs

Posted

A former landfill site at 180 Johnson Street has been transformed into a solar farm, marking asi gnificant milestone in Middletown’s commitment to sustainability. Developed by West Hartford-based solar company Verogy, the 809 kW DC solar energy system will generate over 1 million kWh of clean energy annually—enough to power approximately 105 homes.

Verogy CEO Will Herchel emphasized the innovative approach behind the project, stating, “Where some see an unused space, we see potential. Our collaboration with the City of Middletown demonstrates how underutilized land can become a productive asset that supports local economies, reduces carbon emissions, and bolsters sustainability efforts.”

The Impact of Middletown’s Solar Initiative

Located on a 2.5-acre capped landfill, the solar project is projected to offset approximately 712 metric tons of carbon emissions annually, the equivalent of the greenhouse gases produced by 88,000 gallons of gasoline. Middletown Mayor Ben Florsheim celebrated the project, highlighting its dual benefits:

“This solar installation exemplifies Middletown’s dedication to sustainability and economic savings. Not only are we reducing our carbon footprint, but we are also lowering energy costs—creating a cleaner, greener, and more economically sustainable future for our community.”

State and local leaders joined Middletown officials at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to acknowledge the city’s ongoing efforts to integrate clean energy solutions into its infrastructure.

Middletown’s Broader Energy Strategy

The solar farm aligns with Middletown’s broader energy vision, focusing on achieving 100% renewable energy by 2040. The city has been at the forefront of sustainable energy innovation through programs such as:

  • HeatSmart Program: This initiative, designed to help residents improve energy efficiency and reduce costs, offers home energy assessments, air-sealing services, and insulation upgrades.
  • Fort Hill Farm Biogas Digester: This project converts food waste and manure into renewable energy, reducing organic waste by 25,000 tons annually and saving Middletown approximately $65,000 annually.
  • Streetlight Conversion Project: Transitioning to LED streetlights has saved the city over $300,000 annually.

Recognized for Sustainability Leadership

Middletown’s efforts were recently acknowledged with a Silver-level certification from Sustainable CT, a statewide program promoting efficiency, inclusivity, and climate resilience. The city was recognized for reducing waste, promoting renewable energy, and fostering a thriving local economy.

Krishna Winston, Chair of Middletown’s Resource Recycling Commission, praised the collaborative efforts driving these initiatives: “Sustainability requires creativity, teamwork, and unwavering dedication. Middletown is setting an example for other municipalities in Connecticut and beyond.”
