Milford Mining Expands Copper Output with $100M Investment

Utah-based company scales operations to meet rising global copper demand

Posted

Milford Mining Company has announced a $100 million, decade-long infrastructure initiative aimed at expanding operations near its current Utah facility. The investment is a direct response to the accelerating global demand for copper—driven in part by the rise of clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, and advanced manufacturing. The move is expected to generate more than 1,000 new jobs, reinforcing the company’s role in strengthening domestic mineral production capacity.

Integrating Innovation: AI and Workforce Development in Mining

As part of its forward-looking growth strategy, Milford Mining is collaborating with Utah-based universities to develop an artificial intelligence platform tailored to mining operations. The platform aims to enhance efficiency, decision-making, and data integration across extraction and processing activities. In parallel, the company is building out apprenticeship programs to support workforce readiness in rural areas, fostering long-term employment pipelines in underserved communities.

Sustainable Extraction Aligned with National Resource Strategy

Milford Mining’s operational methodology emphasizes both environmental responsibility and technical advancement. The company employs flotation mill processing and solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW), two techniques that improve metal recovery while reducing environmental impact. These efforts align with the U.S. Department of Energy’s identification of copper as a critical mineral necessary for national energy and security priorities.

With copper demand projected to outpace supply in the coming years, Milford Mining’s domestic scaling could help mitigate potential shortfalls and reduce reliance on international sources. Utah itself holds significant mineral reserves, with the potential to contribute up to 40 of the 50 minerals classified as critical by federal authorities.

Reducing Dependency Through Domestic Production Capacity

The expansion in Utah underscores a broader strategy to diversify and stabilize U.S. mineral supply chains. At present, over half of global copper smelting capacity is concentrated in China. By increasing domestic output, Milford Mining is helping to reduce supply chain vulnerabilities and bolster resource independence—an increasingly urgent issue in geopolitical and economic discussions.
