Testing in southern France at Fontjoncouse involved extensive endurance trials, performance assessments, and system fine-tuning equivalent to over three seasons of competitive racing. Driver feedback has played a crucial role in optimising handling, acceleration and durability under demanding conditions. The Pioneer 25 can accelerate from 0-100kph in 4.5 seconds and tackle gradients up to 130 percent, demonstrating the growing viability of hydrogen in high-performance applications.
Key focus areas included optimising hydrogen fuel cell efficiency and ensuring consistent tire performance across varying terrain. Engineers also addressed the specific demands of off-road competition, where resilience and adaptability are critical.
Hydrogen racing is also attracting strategic investment from both sovereign wealth funds and clean energy leaders. The FIA Extreme H World Cup has partnered with ENOWA, the energy arm of NEOM, which will supply green hydrogen generated from Saudi Arabia’s wind and solar resources. This collaboration underscores the role of emerging markets in advancing hydrogen technologies and infrastructure.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is backing the initiative as part of its broader strategy to diversify across future-focused sectors. Hydrogen racing offers a high-visibility platform for showcasing innovation while supporting the global shift towards clean energy.
