EPA Regional Administrator Michael Martucci visited the U.S. Virgin Islands last week to meet with government leaders, assess infrastructure needs, and advance coordinated efforts on the territory’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Martucci met with Governor Albert Bryan Jr. and other senior officials to address key priorities including landfill management, water quality improvements, and regulatory oversight of industrial operations. The discussions underscored the importance of aligning environmental protection with sustainable economic development.

“Supporting the U.S. Virgin Islands starts with strong partnerships, clear regulations, and smart investments that protect public health while supporting economic growth,” said Martucci. “EPA is committed to working alongside U.S. Virgin Islands leaders to ensure cleaner air, water, and land for the communities we serve, without stifling economic prosperity.”

During the visit, Martucci toured the Anguilla Landfill and Anguilla Wastewater Treatment Plant, where local officials outlined strategies to reduce pollution and strengthen environmental compliance. He also met with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) and the Waste Management Authority (WMA) to discuss long-term solutions for solid waste and wastewater systems.

At the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA), Martucci reviewed ongoing infrastructure upgrades, including the installation of new meter boxes and valves in St. Croix’s Clifton Hill area. These improvements aim to enhance water reliability for residents and address longstanding system challenges.

The visit also included stops at Port Hamilton Refining and Transportation (PHRT) and Ocean Point Terminals (OPT), two major industrial facilities. Martucci emphasized EPA’s role in maintaining oversight, ensuring regulatory compliance, and mitigating environmental risks—while supporting job growth and energy transition efforts in the region.
