has signed a long-term contract with DHL Supply ChainFortum Battery Recycling, a division of Nordic energy company Fortum, to manage logistics services that support the collection, transport, and recycling of EV batteries. The partnership marks a significant step forward for Europe's circular economy, positioning both companies as key players in sustainable e-mobility infrastructure.
Fortum Battery Recycling offers the only European solution covering every stage of the battery recycling value chain. Its advanced recovery processes extract critical raw materials—lithium, cobalt, and nickel—from spent EV batteries with low CO₂ emissions and minimal waste. This collaboration enables Fortum to scale its operations more efficiently while aligning with regional sustainability goals.
DHL’s role includes handling the entire logistics spectrum: from the safe transportation and interim storage of used EV batteries to their timely delivery at Fortum’s recycling facilities. These specialized service logistics ensure smooth, secure operations and compliance with high safety and environmental standards.
“Our collaboration with Fortum underscores our commitment to providing innovative logistics solutions to meet the growing demands of e-mobility,” said Hendrik Venter, CEO at DHL Supply Chain EMEA. “Through our expertise and global reach, we help accelerate the energy transition while maintaining top-tier safety and sustainability.”
Anssi Airas, Head of Business Line Battery at Fortum, added,
“The electrification of Europe is not possible without battery recycling taking place in Europe, for Europe. Our partnership with DHL is a vital piece of that puzzle.”
As global demand for EVs continues to rise, this partnership sets a precedent for how logistics and clean tech companies can work together to close resource loops, reduce environmental impacts, and build infrastructure to support a low-carbon economy.
