, a leader in sustainable supply chain technology, has made a pioneering entry into the mass timber market with the launch of Carbon Smart CLT—the first Cambiumcross-laminated timber (CLT) product crafted entirely from salvaged wood. This innovative material combines high-performance engineering with environmental responsibility, setting a new standard for sustainable mass timber construction.
Cross-laminated timber is a type of mass timber created by layering lumber panels in alternating directions, bonded with strong adhesives for enhanced strength and durability. Cambium’s Carbon Smart CLT takes this a step further by sourcing reclaimed wood through an advanced supply chain platform that connects arborists, sawmills, and manufacturers.
Not only does this process reduce waste, but the resulting CLT meets rigorous structural standards, making it ideal for commercial buildings, residential developments, and infrastructure projects.
Cambium’s Carbon Smart CLT isn’t just a green alternative—it actively reduces the carbon footprint of construction projects. By integrating carbon sequestration data and full traceability into its supply chain, Cambium supports a circular economy. Each cubic meter of Carbon Smart CLT stores approximately one metric ton of CO₂, offering a sustainable replacement for traditional materials like steel and concrete, which are known for their carbon-intensive production.
Cambium’s partnerships with industry leaders—including Mercer Mass Timber, SmartLam North America, Sterling Structural, and Vaagen Timbers—ensure a reliable supply of high-quality Carbon Smart CLT. These collaborations are key to expanding access to sustainable mass timber, helping developers meet both environmental and structural goals.
To lead this growth, Cambium has appointed Charles Gale as Director of Mass Timber. Formerly with SmartLam, Gale brings over seven years of expertise in mass timber projects across the U.S. His focus will be on optimizing supply chains and increasing the adoption of sustainable wood products in large-scale construction.
Cambium’s impact is already measurable. The company has facilitated the movement of over 8 million board feet of Carbon Smart Wood, sequestering more than 10,000 tonnes of CO₂e. With a network of over 240 arborists, sawmills, and logistics partners, Cambium’s platform ensures transparency through chain-of-custody tracking and advanced carbon analytics, enhancing supply chain efficiency.
Cambium will debut its latest sustainable innovation at the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland, Oregon. The event will feature the Carbon Smart Campfire, an art installation designed in collaboration with RIOS, Sterling, Minimal Impact Engineering, and others. This exhibit will showcase the aesthetic versatility, structural strength, and environmental benefits of salvaged wood in mass timber construction.
